"OK, so last time Hillary voiced empathy for Spitzer's plan, but then refused to say where she was on it. Now she opposes it.
Obama had a very bad moment just now. He has, to this point, had the clearest position, but when asked, stepped back from that: "I am not proposing that that's what we do," he said, before making his way back to "yes."
And Edwards, whose answer last time -- in a show of hands -- was "yes" (he didn't explain that he conditioned that on immigration reform passing), this time gave more context and said, "no."
Why so complicated? Well, it's really not a federal issue, not something the president has a hand in. It's also something that Obama, if he's the nominee, is going to spend a whole lot of time explaining in the general election, and to step back to a position of permitting states to do it -- rather than supporting it -- may be politically wise."
